About Wilhelm Marstrand

A central figure of the Danish Golden Age, Wilhelm Marstrand (1810–1873) trained under C.W. Eckersberg at the Royal Danish Academy and became one of the period's sharpest observers of human character. His Italian scenes, drawn from extended stays in Rome during the 1830s and 40s, brought a warmth and theatrical wit to Danish painting that his teacher's cooler classicism rarely allowed. He was equally at home with portraiture, capturing fellow painters like Constantin Hansen with disarming directness. What carries Marstrand's work into a contemporary room is exactly that quality: an unguarded curiosity about people, rendered with the technical clarity of a draftsman who never lost interest in his subjects.
