About Alexej Von Jawlensky

Few painters reduced the human face to its spiritual essence as relentlessly as this Russian-born Expressionist. After leaving the Imperial Guard for Munich in 1896, he fell in with Kandinsky and helped found the New Artists' Association and, later, Der Blaue Reiter circle. His real breakthrough came in the 1920s and 30s with the Mystical Heads, Abstract Heads, and Meditations - icon-like portraits stripped down to crossbars of brow and nose, glowing in saturated planes of color. Hounded by illness and banned by the Nazis as degenerate, he kept painting smaller and smaller heads until he couldn't hold a brush. The work still hums with that contained intensity.
