About Albert Edelfelt

Few nineteenth-century Finnish painters did more to drag their national art into conversation with Paris than this Porvoo-born realist, who trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme in the 1870s and built a career bridging Nordic light and French academic polish. Working from 1854 to 1905, he moved fluently between historical scenes, plein-air landscapes of the Finnish countryside, and society portraits commissioned across Europe, including work for the Russian imperial court. He was a close friend of Pasteur, whose famous laboratory portrait he painted in 1885. For contemporary viewers, his appeal lies in that quiet balance: technically rigorous, emotionally restrained, and unmistakably Northern in its handling of atmosphere.
