About Felix Vallotton

Among the Nabis, he was the outsider - a Swiss-born painter and printmaker who joined the Paris avant-garde in the 1890s but kept a chillier, more sardonic eye than Bonnard or Vuillard. His woodcuts almost single-handedly revived the medium as a modern art form, reducing figures and interiors to flat black-and-white shapes with a graphic punch that prefigured Art Deco and twentieth-century poster design. Look closely and there's almost always a hint of social satire under the elegance: bourgeois Paris caught mid-gossip, mid-flirtation, mid-crime. For collectors drawn to bold composition and a touch of wry intelligence, his prints still feel startlingly contemporary.
