About Thomas Martine Ronaldson

A Scottish-born painter who built his career in Edwardian and interwar London, Ronaldson (1881–1942) belonged to that generation of British portraitists who absorbed the loose, atmospheric brushwork of Sargent without quite abandoning the quieter intimacy of the Glasgow Boys. He trained at the Slade and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, working primarily in oils on portraits, figure studies, and the occasional nude. His pictures favor warm interior light, sympathetic likenesses, and a restrained palette that keeps the focus on character rather than spectacle. For contemporary viewers, his work offers the appeal of early twentieth-century British painting at its most humane and unfussy.
