About Frank Blackwell Mayer

Among nineteenth-century American genre painters, he occupies an unusual niche: a Baltimore-born artist who spent the summer of 1851 living among the Dakota at Traverse des Sioux, filling sketchbooks with what became one of the most clear-eyed visual records of pre-reservation Plains life. Trained in Paris under Gleyre and Brion in the 1860s, he returned with a tight, almost archival realism that he applied equally to historical American subjects, including Revolutionary-era scenes painted with antiquarian precision. For a viewer today, his work reads as something quieter than the grand history painting of his peers: small, observed, and surprisingly modern in its attention to ordinary people.
