About Karel Appel

Few postwar painters attacked the canvas with the unrestrained physicality of this Dutch artist, who in 1948 helped found CoBrA, the short-lived but seismic movement that united painters from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam in revolt against geometric abstraction and academic restraint. He worked in thick, gestural slabs of color, drawing on the imagery of children, folk art, and primal myth to build figures that seem half-formed, grinning, vaguely menacing. Animals, masks, and wild-eyed creatures recur throughout his sixty-year output, painted with the brute confidence of someone who never stopped trusting instinct over polish. For viewers drawn to expressionist energy with a streak of dark humor, his work hits hard and stays interesting.
