About Gabriel Von Max

Born in Prague in 1840, he trained under Karl von Piloty in Munich and became one of the more eccentric figures of late 19th-century German painting. His specialty was the inward gaze: dreaming girls, mystics, spiritualists, women caught mid-thought or mid-reverie. He was deeply involved in Darwinism, parapsychology, and Eastern philosophy, and kept a small zoo of monkeys he painted obsessively, lending his portraiture a strange psychological undertow that set him apart from his Academic contemporaries. For today's viewer, his quiet portraits of pensive women still read as remarkably modern - introspective, slightly melancholic, and refreshingly free of Victorian sentimentality.
