About William Holbrook Beard

Few nineteenth-century American painters built an entire career on anthropomorphic animals, but this one did - and did it with a satirist's eye sharper than most of his portrait-painting peers. Born in Ohio in 1824 and active in New York through the Gilded Age, he became the Hudson River School's resident contrarian, painting bears in business suits and monkeys at court while his contemporaries were busy with luminous landscapes. His 1879 "Bulls and Bears in the Market" still hangs at the New York Stock Exchange. For collectors today, his work reads as something rare: genuinely funny art that takes its craft seriously.
