About Raoul Dufy

Few painters made joy look so effortless. A French Fauvist who came up alongside Matisse in the early 1900s, Dufy (1877-1953) developed a signature shorthand of quick calligraphic lines floating over loose washes of color, as if the drawing and the painting had agreed to part ways. He turned to the bright social world for subjects - regattas, racecourses, concert halls, the harbors of Nice and Le Havre - and gave them a buoyancy that still feels modern. For anyone drawn to French modernism but tired of its gloomier corners, his work offers color, music, and a Mediterranean sense of pleasure without sentimentality.
