About Race
Few American painters worked as strangely, or as slowly, as Albert Pinkham Ryder. A reclusive figure working out of New York in the late nineteenth century, he built up his small canvases in thick, brooding layers of glaze and pigment, often returning to the same painting for years. His subjects came from Shakespeare, the Bible, and the sea, but they arrive on the canvas as something closer to dream than illustration. Ryder's moonlit visions later struck a chord with Marsden Hartley and Jackson Pollock, who saw in him an American original. For a contemporary viewer, his work still reads as quietly unnerving and deeply felt.
