About Edmund Charles Tarbell

Few American painters absorbed French Impressionism and then quietly Americanized it as completely as this Boston-based figure painter, a leading member of the group critics dubbed the Tarbellites in the 1890s. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he returned to teach at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where his influence on a generation of New England painters was profound. His interiors of women reading, sewing, or caught in shafts of window light fuse Vermeer's stillness with a looser, light-struck brushwork.
