About Filipp Malyavin

Few painters built an entire career out of red. Born in 1869 to a Samara peasant family, this self-taught icon painter turned Imperial Academy student became famous for vast canvases of Russian village women whirling in scarlet shawls, their dresses dissolved into broad, almost abstract strokes of pigment. He trained under Ilya Repin but pushed past realism toward something closer to Fauvism, anticipating the color experiments of Western Europe while staying rooted in Russian folk life. Emigrating to Paris after the Revolution, he kept painting his babas until his death in 1940. The work still reads as startlingly modern, sensual, and unapologetically loud.
