About Acisclo Antonio Palomino De Castro Y Velasco

Court painter to Charles II of Spain and one of the last serious practitioners of the Spanish Baroque, this seventeenth-century artist trained under Juan Carreño de Miranda and Francisco Rizi before earning the title of pintor del rey in 1688. His religious compositions carry the soft luminosity and theatrical gesture of late Madrid school painting, with figures arranged in clear devotional tableaux meant to move the viewer rather than dazzle them. He is equally important as a writer: his 1724 treatise El Museo Pictórico is the foundational source for early Spanish art history. For collectors drawn to Counter-Reformation sensibility rendered with genuine tenderness, his work rewards close looking.
