About Women

Few American painters did more to shape early twentieth-century figurative work than Charles Webster Hawthorne, who founded the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown in 1899. A student of William Merritt Chase, he taught a generation to see in masses of color rather than line, sending his pupils outdoors with palette knives to block in figures against the New England light. His canvases of Portuguese fishermen, working women, and quiet domestic groups carry a tonal weight that owes as much to Frans Hals as to American Impressionism. For viewers drawn to portraiture with real psychological gravity, his figures still hold the room they're hung in.
