About Thomas Hiram Hotchkiss
Among the small circle of American painters who fell hard for Italy in the mid-nineteenth century, few worked with the quiet intensity of this Hudson River School outlier. Born around 1833 in New York, he settled in Italy by the early 1860s and spent the rest of his short life painting the Roman Campagna, its crumbling aqueducts, and Tuscan hill towns with a stripped-down clarity that anticipates later tonalist work. He died in Taormina in 1869, leaving a modest but coherent body of landscapes. For viewers drawn to ruins, warm Mediterranean light, and a painter's eye for structure over sentiment, his work rewards long looking.
