About Henriette Ronner Knip

If anyone earned the title of cat painter in nineteenth-century Europe, it was this Dutch-Belgian animalier. Born in 1821 into the Knip family of painters, she began with dogs and woodland scenes before pivoting in mid-career to the subject that made her name: domestic cats, painted with a naturalist's eye for anatomy and a novelist's instinct for personality. Her kittens tumble across velvet cushions, paw at sewing baskets, and regard the viewer with unmistakable feline calculation. Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium was among her patrons. For modern viewers, the appeal is immediate and undiminished: these are still the most psychologically convincing cats in Western painting.
