About Hendrick De Clerck

A late Flemish Mannerist working in Brussels around the turn of the seventeenth century, this is a painter who held onto the elegant artifice of the previous generation just as the Baroque was beginning to surge through the Low Countries. Court painter to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella from 1606, he specialized in mythological and religious scenes populated by elongated figures, jewel-bright drapery, and luminous landscape backgrounds often collaborated on with Jan Brueghel the Elder and Denijs van Alsloot. For viewers drawn to the moment when Northern decorative precision met classical storytelling, his paintings offer a quieter, more polished alternative to the era's better-known Antwerp dramatists.
