About Jacques Laurent Agasse

Among the Swiss painters who built careers in Regency London, he carved out a peculiar and rewarding niche: the exotic animal portrait. Born in Geneva in 1767 and trained briefly under Jacques-Louis David in Paris, he settled in England in 1800 and found steady patronage from aristocratic collectors and the Zoological Society, painting creatures freshly arrived from distant colonies with a naturalist's patience and a portraitist's eye for character. His work sits at the strange intersection of scientific record and romantic curiosity, capturing the early nineteenth century's appetite for the unfamiliar. For viewers today, the appeal is that same quiet attentiveness - animals seen, not symbolised.
