About William Burgis

Among the earliest documentarians of colonial America's port cities, this English-born engraver gave us some of the only surviving visual records of Boston and New York in the 1720s. His View of the Light House, depicting Boston Light shortly after its 1716 construction, is among the first printed images of an American lighthouse - a working artifact of maritime history rather than a romantic invention. Burgis worked in the topographical tradition, prizing accuracy over flourish: ships are rigged correctly, shorelines measured, buildings rendered as they stood. For collectors drawn to early American history, nautical heritage, or the visual culture of the colonial Atlantic, his prints carry genuine documentary weight.
