About Jean Fouquet

Working in the mid-fifteenth century, this French court painter bridged the late Gothic of his homeland with the spatial logic he absorbed during a formative trip to Italy around 1446. He served Charles VII and Louis XI, producing panel paintings, manuscript illuminations, and portraits with a cool, almost geometric clarity that set him apart from his Flemish contemporaries. The Melun Diptych, with its famously strange pale Madonna flanked by red and blue seraphim, remains his signature statement - sacred imagery rendered with unsettling poise. For a contemporary viewer, his work offers something rare: medieval devotion filtered through an early Renaissance eye, restrained, precise, and quietly modern.
