About Frederick Sandys

Few Pre-Raphaelites drew with the precision of this Norwich-born craftsman, whose hard, jewel-like line owed as much to Dürer and German Renaissance engraving as it did to Rossetti, with whom he briefly shared a studio in the 1860s. Working in chalk, pen, and oil, he specialised in single female figures drawn from literature and legend - Morgan le Fay, Medea, Vivien - rendered with a chilly, almost forensic clarity that set him apart from the softer dreaminess of his peers. For viewers drawn to Pre-Raphaelite subject matter but tired of its sweetness, his sharper, more unsettling vision still holds its edge.
