Few painters captured the polite theatre of eighteenth-century Antwerp domestic life with the easy fluency of this Flemish genre specialist. Born in 1714 into a family of painters and trained by his father Jan Josef the Elder, he spent his career documenting the social rituals of the Southern Netherlandish middle class: card parties, music gatherings, flirtations in tidy interiors and shaded gardens. His figures are small, gestural, and carefully observed, dressed in the silks and waistcoats of the Rococo moment. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is the gentle voyeurism of these scenes - a window onto private life from three centuries ago, rendered with quiet wit.
