About Herbert James Draper

Few late Victorians painted water like Draper did. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools and steeped in classical mythology, he made his name with large mythological canvases featuring sea nymphs, naiads, and drowning sailors, all rendered with an anatomical confidence that owed something to his Paris studies under Jean-Paul Laurens. Working in London from the 1890s into the 1920s, he occupied the same Olympian-romantic territory as Leighton and Waterhouse, though his subjects tended toward the wilder, wetter edges of myth. For viewers drawn to figurative painting with real narrative weight - bodies in motion, light through seawater, stories from the older books - his work still holds up.
