About Adolph Tidemand

Few painters did more to shape how Norway pictures itself than this nineteenth-century Düsseldorf-trained romantic, who turned rural Norwegian life into a national visual language. Born in 1814 in Mandal, he studied in Copenhagen and Düsseldorf before settling into the kind of ethnographic interiors and folk scenes - women at their knitting, weddings, baptisms, mountain farmsteads - that became templates for Norwegian Romantic Nationalism. His collaboration with landscape painter Hans Gude produced some of the defining images of the movement. The appeal now is partly anthropological, partly painterly: quiet domestic moments rendered with a steady, observant hand and a real affection for the people in them.
