About Gustave Jean Jacquet

A student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, this French academic painter built his career on portraits of elegant women in silks, velvets and fur-trimmed capes, rendered with the kind of textural finish his teacher demanded. Born in Paris in 1846, he first exhibited at the Salon at sixteen and won a medal there by 1868, eventually shifting from historical subjects toward the fashionable beauties that defined his mature work. His paintings sit at the crossroads of Second Empire glamour and academic discipline, and they still read the way they were meant to: as quiet luxuries, full of soft skin, watchful eyes and beautifully painted cloth.
