About Lajos Mark
Trained at the Munich and Paris academies in the 1880s and 1890s, this Hungarian portraitist built a career on the kind of polished, light-filled society painting that bridged academic tradition and the looser brushwork of the Belle Époque. Born in 1867 in Retsag, he became one of the most sought-after portrait painters in early twentieth-century Budapest and Berlin, with a particular gift for rendering fabric, parlor light, and the quiet poise of his sitters. His interior scenes feel observed rather than staged - a useful quality now, when the appeal of a well-painted private moment has only grown.
