About Oswald Achenbach

Among the Düsseldorf School's nineteenth-century landscape painters, he carved out a niche almost entirely his own: Italy. While his older brother Andreas chased the wild North Sea coasts, Oswald (1827–1905) crossed the Alps repeatedly from the 1840s onward, painting the gardens of Tivoli and Frascati, festivals on Ischia, and the warm dust of the Roman Campagna. His handling of southern light, particularly at dusk, drew comparisons to Claude Lorrain, and he taught a generation of landscape painters at the Düsseldorf Academy. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is straightforward: these are rooms with windows onto a sunlit, unhurried Mediterranean nobody quite paints anymore.
