About Edward Mcknight Kauffer

Few designers reshaped the modern poster as decisively. An American who settled in London in 1914, E. McKnight Kauffer brought Cubist geometry and Vorticist edge to commercial work, turning the humble travel placard into something closer to gallery art. His long partnership with Frank Pick at London Underground produced some of the sharpest graphic design of the interwar years, and his flattened planes, bold diagonals, and confident negative space drew directly from Wyndham Lewis and the European avant-garde. A century on, the work still reads as startlingly contemporary - graphic, architectural, and unfussy. It sits comfortably alongside mid-century modernism while predating most of it.
