About Edmund Henry Osthaus

Few painters have understood sporting dogs from the inside out the way this German-born American did. Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy before emigrating in 1883, he settled in Toledo, Ohio, where he eventually devoted himself almost entirely to portraits of pointers and setters in the field. He owned and bred the dogs he painted, judged at major field trials, and knew exactly how a setter's tail carries when it catches scent versus when it's simply curious. That intimacy shows. His watercolors and oils from the 1890s through the 1920s remain the standard for the genre, prized by anyone who has ever followed a bird dog through wet grass.
