About Arthur B Davies
Few American painters straddled two worlds as deftly as this turn-of-the-century dreamer who also happened to be one of the chief organizers of the 1913 Armory Show, the exhibition that dropped European modernism onto American soil like a depth charge. His own canvases stayed lyrical and pastoral, populated by slender nude figures drifting through misty landscapes that owe as much to Puvis de Chavannes as to the Italian Renaissance. A founding member of The Eight, he advocated fiercely for artistic freedom while keeping his own brush firmly tied to allegory and myth. The result is quiet, strange, and genuinely his own.
