About Orra White Hitchcock

Among the earliest American women to work seriously as a scientific illustrator, she spent decades translating the natural world into clean, precise images for classroom use at Amherst College, where her husband Edward taught geology. Working in the 1820s through 1840s, she produced hundreds of large-format ink and watercolor drawings of fossils, strata, marine creatures, and prehistoric beasts, all intended to be hung before lecture halls full of students. Her style sits at an unusual intersection of folk art clarity and rigorous observation, with bold silhouettes and flat fields of color that read as startlingly modern today, closer in feel to mid-century graphic design than to nineteenth-century natural history.
