About Edward Francis Burney

A cousin of the novelist Fanny Burney and nephew of the music historian Charles Burney, this English draughtsman moved through one of late Georgian London's most literary households, and it shows in his work. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the 1770s, he developed a delicate watercolour and pen technique well suited to social satire and intimate portraiture, producing biting genre scenes of fashionable life alongside tender family likenesses. His satirical pieces lampooning girls' boarding schools and music assemblies remain the sharpest record we have of Regency manners observed from inside the drawing room. For collectors drawn to wit, line, and period detail, his drawings reward close looking.
