About George Hitchcock

Few American painters embraced the bright outdoor light of the Dutch countryside as fully as this Rhode Island-born expatriate, who settled in Egmond-aan-Zee in the 1880s and built an entire career around figures placed among flowering fields. Trained in Paris and influenced by the plein-air realism of the Hague School, he developed a distinctive blend of religious and mythological subjects rendered with Impressionist colour, often surrounding his women in tulips, poppies, or coastal grasses. He ran a respected summer school that drew American students abroad before his death in 1913. The result is sacred imagery that feels sunlit, grounded, and entirely of this world.
