About Alphonse Mucha
Few artists shaped a visual movement as completely as the Czech painter and decorative artist who became the public face of Art Nouveau in 1890s Paris. His breakthrough came almost by accident in 1894, when a last-minute commission for a Sarah Bernhardt theatre poster, Gismonda, launched a style so distinctive it was simply called "le style Mucha." The formula is unmistakable: a serene central figure framed by mosaic halos, sinuous hair, and panels of stylised flowers and ornament, all rendered in muted pastels. More than a century on, his decorative panels still feel modern in their graphic clarity, a reminder that elegance and accessibility were never mutually exclusive.
