About Colman Samuel

A founding member of the American Watercolor Society and a key figure in the second generation of the Hudson River School, Samuel Colman (1832-1920) built his reputation on a restless curiosity that pulled him far beyond the Catskills. He trained briefly under Asher B. Durand before spending years sketching in Spain, Morocco, North Africa, and later Mexico, returning with desert caravans and Mediterranean harbors rendered in luminous, atmospheric washes. Colman also collaborated with Louis Comfort Tiffany on interior design commissions, which sharpened his eye for pattern and color. For collectors today, his landscapes offer that rare mix of Romantic grandeur and genuine traveler's observation.
