About William J Glackens

Among the Ashcan School painters who dragged American art into the streets and saloons of turn-of-the-century New York, he was the one with the keenest eye for color. Trained as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia in the 1890s, he ran with Robert Henri's circle before exhibiting with The Eight in 1908, the show that broke the National Academy's grip on American taste. After a 1906 trip to Paris, his palette brightened considerably under Renoir's influence, earning him the nickname "the American Renoir." His scenes of restaurants, parks, and bathers still feel alive because he painted leisure as a working illustrator: with appetite, observation, and unhurried affection.
