About Elmer Wachtel

Among the first generation of California plein air painters, this self-taught Pennsylvanian arrived in Los Angeles in 1882 and spent the next four decades teaching himself to see the dry hills, oaks, and high Sierra lakes of his adopted state. He worked largely outdoors, favoring muted tonalist harmonies over the brighter palette that would later define California Impressionism, and his marriage to fellow painter Marion Kavanagh in 1904 produced one of the West's notable artistic partnerships. For a contemporary viewer, his landscapes offer something quieter than the postcard West - dusk-toned, contemplative, closer in spirit to Whistler than to Bierstadt.
