About Bartolome Bermejo

Few painters working in fifteenth-century Spain absorbed the oil techniques of the Flemish masters as completely as this itinerant Cordoban. Active from roughly 1468 to 1501, he carried Netherlandish luminosity south into Aragon and Catalonia, producing panels of unusual psychological weight at a moment when Iberian painting was still largely tied to tempera and gold ground. The Desplà Pietà in Barcelona Cathedral remains his signature achievement, dense with grief and geological detail. For a contemporary viewer, his work rewards close looking: hard, jewel-like surfaces, hands and faces rendered with almost northern precision, and a quiet strangeness that sets him apart from his Spanish contemporaries.
