About Gerard Hoet

A Dutch Golden Age painter trained in Utrecht, he came of age in the late seventeenth century working in the classicizing strain of history painting that looked to French and Italian models rather than the homely interiors his countrymen are better known for. Born in 1648 in Zaltbommel and active until his death in 1733, he built a reputation for small-scale biblical and mythological scenes rendered with theatrical poise and a careful, almost engraver's clarity of line. His ambitious set pieces, like the Death of Cleopatra, reward viewers who enjoy narrative painting on its own terms: composed, literate, and quietly dramatic without resorting to spectacle.
