About Francesc Gimeno Arasa

Among Catalan painters working at the turn of the twentieth century, few cut a more solitary figure. Born in Tortosa in 1858 and trained briefly under Carlos de Haes in Madrid, he developed a dense, almost bruised style of portraiture and landscape that anticipated Expressionism well before it had a name in Spain. Critical recognition came late and grudgingly during his lifetime, though Picasso later named him among the Catalan painters he most admired. His intimate domestic scenes and Barcelona interiors carry an emotional weight that still feels surprisingly modern - quiet, psychologically charged, and built from a palette that broods rather than flatters.
