About Modest Urgell

Few painters made melancholy a subject the way this Catalan landscapist did. Working in the late nineteenth century, he built an entire career around twilight cemeteries, empty fields, lonely chapels and the long horizontals of dusk on the Catalan plain. The bell tolling for evening prayer, the cypress against a fading sky - these were his recurring notes, painted with a restraint that set him apart from his more theatrical Romantic contemporaries. A friend of Santiago Rusiñol and a quiet influence on the young Joan Miró, he turned provincial sorrow into something genuinely modern. His paintings still feel contemplative rather than morbid, suited to anyone drawn to stillness over spectacle.
