About Maurice Sterne

Among the more well-traveled American modernists of his generation, this Latvian-born painter built a career out of restless looking. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York in the 1890s, then spent nearly a decade abroad, absorbing Italian Renaissance fresco, Parisian post-Impressionism, and a long stretch in Bali that reshaped his sense of form. By the 1930s he was painting ambitious figurative work and earning a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1933, the first the museum gave to a living American artist. His early European scenes carry that hybrid sensibility, drawing equally from Degas and the older Italian masters.
