About Nils Dardel

Few Swedish modernists travelled as widely or absorbed as much as this restless figure, whose painting drifted between Parisian post-Impressionism, Japanese woodblock flatness, and a queasy, dreamlike storytelling all his own. Born in 1888 and trained in Stockholm before settling into the Montparnasse circles of the 1910s and 20s, he developed a signature style of clean outlines, theatrical colour, and elegant figures shadowed by something melancholy or perverse beneath the surface. Works like The Dying Dandy made his reputation, but it's the portraits and the gently unsettling tableaux that endure. For a contemporary eye, the appeal is exactly that tension: decorative on the wall, strange the longer you look.
