About Kamisaka Sekka

Often called the last great master of the Rinpa school, this Kyoto-born designer carried a three-hundred-year-old decorative tradition into the twentieth century and gave it a distinctly modern edge. Trained initially in the Shijō style, he traveled to Glasgow in 1901, where exposure to Art Nouveau sharpened his sense of flat pattern, negative space, and graphic boldness. The result, seen most fully in his 1909 woodblock album Momoyogusa (A World of Things), is a body of work where classical motifs sit comfortably beside almost abstract simplifications. For contemporary eyes, the appeal is immediate: spare compositions, confident color, and a quiet wit that still feels current.
