About William Penhallow Henderson

Few American modernists translated the New Mexican landscape with as much architectural feeling as this Boston-trained painter, who arrived in Santa Fe in 1916 and never really left. Trained at the Museum School and steeped in the Boston tonalist tradition, he shifted decisively after his move west, developing a hard-edged, almost geometric handling of adobe forms, Penitente rituals, and Pueblo dances that placed him at the heart of the early Santa Fe art colony alongside figures like Marsden Hartley and the Cinco Pintores. His religious processions and desert scenes still feel urgent to modern eyes - solemn, structural, and quietly attuned to the spiritual weight of the Southwest.
