About Ralph Albert Blakelock

Few American painters worked the night sky with the obsessive intensity of this nineteenth-century visionary. Largely self-taught, he developed a moody, deeply pigmented approach to moonlit landscapes - silhouetted trees against luminous skies, Native American encampments glowing beside firelight - built up through layered glazes that gave his canvases an almost lacquered depth. Born in 1847 in New York, he spent time among Western tribes in the 1860s, and that experience shaped the rest of his output. His later years were marked by mental illness and tragic exploitation by the market that finally embraced him. The paintings hold a quiet, romantic strangeness that still pulls viewers in close.
