About Pierre Denys De Montfort

Few naturalists have left a stranger legacy. A French malacologist working in the early 1800s, he became fixated on the idea that genuinely colossal cephalopods prowled the deep, and in his 1801 Histoire Naturelle des Mollusques he published the engraving that fixed the giant octopus in the popular imagination forever: tentacles wrapped around a three-masted ship off the coast of Angola. Scientific opinion mocked him for it, and he died in poverty around 1820, but the sea monsters he drew turned out to be less fanciful than his contemporaries believed. His illustrations sit at the hinge between Enlightenment zoology and Romantic-era wonder, which is exactly why they still pull a room toward them.
