About Liubov Popova

Few artists threw themselves into the Russian avant-garde with quite her intensity. A central figure in the Constructivist circle alongside Rodchenko and Stepanova, she pushed Cubo-Futurism toward something harder and more architectural, building her "Painterly Architectonic" series in the late 1910s as collisions of flat planes, weighted color, and structural tension. By 1921 she had largely abandoned easel painting for textile and theater design, arguing that art should enter daily life. She died of scarlet fever in 1924, barely thirty-five. Her compositions still feel startlingly modern - graphic, rigorous, and confident in a way that speaks directly to anyone drawn to early twentieth-century geometric abstraction.
