About Cimabue
Working in late 13th-century Florence, this is the painter who began pulling Italian art out of the flat, gold-ground Byzantine tradition and toward something recognizably human. The figures in his great altarpieces still sit on heavenly thrones, but their faces have weight, their robes fall with gravity, and there is a flicker of real emotion behind the gilding. Born around 1240 and active until roughly 1302, he was, according to Vasari, the teacher of Giotto - which makes him the hinge on which Western painting turns. For modern viewers, his work offers that rare thing: sacred imagery with genuine tenderness, austere but never cold.
